This session will explore how Quantile Measures can be used to differentiate instruction for students to meet their needs and connect them with resources that match their readiness to learn, within the framework of the core course curriculum.

Using High Yield Routines to Promote Discourse and Unpack Student Thinking (Michael, Room # 343)

  • Pre-K and/or Elementary, PK-6, Middle Level, 6-8, High School, 9-12

The effective mathematics teaching practices encourage us to promote reasoning and problem solving, facilitate math discourse, and support productive struggle.  Similarly, the standards for mathematical practice encourage our students to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them and to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.  These teacher and student practices require math class to have a makeover but changing how students engage with mathematics can seem daunting. In this session, we will engage with, discuss, and plan for small-scale and high-yield routines that can enhance our curriculums and build a problem-solving discourse community in the classroom. These routines require small changes that adapt typical K-12 math problems and classroom questions to be more open-ended and encourage reasoning and discussion. Furthermore, these routines can act as a space to build and reflect on our practice as teachers, providing a non-threatening and small-scale way to adapt our instruction and stretch for growth in targeted ways.

Making Sense of Number Sense  (Elizabeth, Room # 222)

  • Pre-K and/or Elementary, PK-6

Often overlooked, this session will explore the deep number sense and algebraic thinking skills in 1st grade that lay the groundwork for success with multi-digit computation in subsequent grades. Experience a few of the models and strategies introduced in 1st grade so you can infuse them in your 2nd-5th grade lessons.

Strategies for Integrating Math and Science through the NGSS (Russell, Room # 129)
